To buy a pre-owned Rolex Datejust safely in Australia, check four things: the seller, the watch, the paperwork and the payment terms. Buy from a seller with a real business address and clear returns policy, confirm the reference and serial match any papers, inspect the dial, bezel and bracelet for non-original or worn parts, ask about service history, compare the price with similar watches, and use a payment and delivery method that protects you. The ten checks below walk through each step.
1. Check the seller first

Look for a seller with a physical address, a working email and phone contact, and written policies for delivery and returns. Read how they describe watches: a good listing gives the reference, case size, metal, dial, bracelet, year where known and honest condition notes. You can see how we describe each watch in our shop and read our about page and refund and returns policy.
2. Confirm the model and reference

Make sure you know exactly which Datejust you are buying. The reference tells you the generation, size and metal; our guide to Datejust reference numbers explains how to read it. Check that the case size suits your wrist using our size guide.
3. Match the serial and reference to the papers

If the watch comes with its warranty card or papers, the reference and serial number on them should match the watch. Ask the seller to confirm both. Papers are not essential, as many genuine vintage Datejusts no longer have them, but a complete set usually adds to value and resale appeal.
4. Inspect the dial, hands and Cyclops

The dial should be clean and even, with crisp printing and correctly aligned markers. The Cyclops lens over the date should magnify it clearly. Be cautious with diamond dials: factory diamond dials carry specific dial options, while aftermarket diamonds added later generally reduce value. Our diamond Datejust collection explains this in more detail.
5. Check the bezel, case and bracelet

Look at the fluted bezel for dents, and at the case edges for heavy polishing, which can soften the original shape. On the bracelet, check for stretch between the links and confirm the internal circumference fits your wrist, adding or removing links if needed. We list bracelet sizes where known, as on our Datejust 31 with an 18cm bracelet.
6. Ask about servicing and accuracy

Ask when the watch was last serviced and whether it is keeping good time. A mechanical watch will need periodic servicing, so factor that into the price of older pieces. Modern Datejusts are certified to −2/+2 seconds a day, as explained in our guide to Superlative Chronometer certification.
7. Compare the price

Compare the asking price with similar watches of the same reference, metal, dial and condition. A price far below market is a warning sign. Our Rolex Datejust price guide and Oyster Perpetual Datejust price guide show current Australian ranges.
8. Use a payment method you understand

Know how you are paying and when the watch ships. We accept direct bank transfer and PayID; your watch is prepared for dispatch once payment clears. Always confirm the seller’s bank details directly with them before sending money, and never send funds to details provided by a third party.
9. Insist on insured delivery

A Rolex should always travel fully insured with tracking. We ship insured Australia-wide, free on orders over $10,000 and for a flat $49 below that; see our delivery information.
10. Know your rights and the returns policy

Under the Australian Consumer Law you are entitled to a remedy if a watch has a major fault or is not as described. Change-of-mind returns are different and depend on the seller, so ask before you buy. Our refund and returns policy explains how we handle both.
Red flags to walk away from

- A price far below comparable watches, with pressure to pay quickly.
- A seller who will not give a reference number, serial number or extra photos.
- Payment requested to a personal account in a different name, or details sent by a third party.
- Vague condition notes such as “excellent” with no detail about scratches, polishing or bracelet stretch.
- No physical address, no returns policy and no insured delivery.
If any of these apply, pause and ask questions. A genuine seller will be happy to answer them.
